The results of the tender for the initial concept of the main exhibition

On 24 October 2009, the jury made up of Wiesław Bielawski, Stefan Chwin, Jarosław Krawczyk, Boris Kudlička, Jack Lohmann, Piotr M. Majewski – secretary, Andrew Nagorski, Andrzej Pągowski – chairman and Andrzej Wajda adjudicated the competition for the initial concept of the main exhibition.

The jury recognized project no. 770055 by Danuta Słomczyńska Pracownia Projektowo-Dekoratorska of Poland, which obtained 64 out of a possible 100 points, with a 3,000-euro award. The jury acknowledged this project’s daring and intriguing artistic concept whose central element was a birch wood, which would be introduced into the building. The jury did, however, express the reservation whether this idea would not predetermine the building’s architectural design, the subject of a separate request for proposals.

The second prize of 15,000 euros went to proposal no. 915309 submitted by HSD/Haley Sharpe Design from Britain, which was awarded 80 points. The jury highly praised the design’s outstanding artistic form, whose clear and precise minimalism results in consistent attention to detail.

The winner of the 50,000-euro first prize was Tempora S.A. from Belgium, with project no. 041148. The jury’s verdict stated that this proposal largely fulfilled the organizer’s criteria. Especially important was its ability to move decisively away from display boards to a differentiated spatial exhibition. The attractiveness of this design is due also to the wealth of its scenographic forms and the originality of the proposed exhibition forms. Its scenographic values enable the visitor to identify emotionally with the exhibition’s historical context and with individual experiences of war. In the opinion of the jury, these qualities significantly enrich the exhibition’s core message.

Two submissions were disqualified. Proposal no. 920548 arrived after the deadline, as addressed in pt. 10.3 of the request for proposals. Proposal no. 183989 was compromised by the fact that its presentation CD revealed the identity of its authors.
