“WWII 80 Years After. What Remains From the Second World War Today?” International Competition for Journalists
On the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, the European Network Remembrance and Solidarity (ENRS) invites journalists from around the world to take part in the competition: “WWII 80 Years After. What Remains From the Second World War Today?”
The war, in which 80% of the world at that time participated, permanently changed the landscape of Europe and the world – shaping borders, societies, memory, and national identity. Today we ask: how is its legacy perceived in different countries? How does it influence contemporary geopolitics, architecture, historical education, or collective memory?
The competition is open to journalists, publishers, and freelancers who published work related to the impact of World War II on the present between 1 January and 31 December 2025.
Entries may cover topics such as:
• geopolitical consequences of the war,
• recurrence of historical processes,
• intergenerational trauma,
• shaping of national identities,
• post-war architecture,
• historical education
and more.
Competition categories:
• Press or online article (excluding blogs and social media),
• Audio material – radio program, podcast, or recording,
• Audiovisual material – video report, documentary film, or TV programme.
Submissions must include an English translation (text, transcript, or subtitles) as well as a link or scanned copy confirming publication. The submission deadline is 31 December 2025 at 11:59 PM. Entries should be sent by email to: ww2stories@enrs.eu.
The results will be announced by 15 February 2025. The full competition rules are available at https://enrs.eu/project/grand-stories-journalism-awards.
An international jury composed of experts, including Keith Lowe, the author of several major works of history including the bestselling Savage Continent, will select the winners, who will receive €2,500 in each category. The best works will also be published on www.enrs.eu and widely promoted on social media.
Participation in the competition is not only an opportunity for a prestigious award but also a chance to establish international contacts and cooperation in future ENRS projects.
We invite you to take part – let us discover how different nations tell the story of World War II.
