RULES AND REGULATIONS Lieutenant-Colonel JAN KOWALEWSKI AWARD
The Jan Kowalewski Award, hereinafter referred to as the "Award", is an annual, international and
interdisciplinary prize, awarded through a competition to individuals representing various fields of
knowledge and professions, who, using the power of their intellect, knowledge and skills, act for the
common good; individuals who, by overcoming their own barriers and limitations, help others, are
role models for them, engage in social, economic, scientific and cultural life.
§ 1
ORGANISERS
The organizers of the "Lieutenant Colonel Jan Kowalewski Award" competition are the Museum of
the Second World War in Gdańsk, 1 Bartoszewski Square, hereinafter referred to as the "Museum"
and the Technical University of Gdańsk, 11/12 G. Narutowicza Street, hereinafter referred to as "PG".
§ 2
AWARD
1. The prize will be awarded as of 2019 for the first time.
2. The Award is a statuette, a diploma, and a cash prize in the amount of PLN 10,000 (ten
thousand). Regardless of the prize awarded, the Chapter may grant honourable mentions.
3. The Award may be granted to the same person only once.
4. The Award is granted by the Jury acting as the Award Chapter.
5. The Award is granted for outstanding achievements in the past calendar year or within the
time span of the last few years.
6. The founder of the Award is the Museum of WWII in Gdańsk
7. The Museum may grant other entity the status of a co-founder of the Award.
§ 3
CATEGORIES
The Award will be granted in two categories:
1. "Poland for the World" - the Award is granted to Polish representatives of various fields of
knowledge, for outstanding achievements in scientific, cultural and research work, merits for
the defense of the country, which shift the borders of cognition and open new cognitive
perspectives, make an outstanding contribution to the progress of civilization and culture of
our country, ensure Poland a significant place in taking up the most ambitious challenges of
the modern world, cross the borders of the Homeland, strengthen national pride, shape a
positive image of Poland in the world or tighten ties with other nations. The prize is awarded
in two age subcategories:
a. up to the age of 35,
b. over 35 years of age .
2. "The World for Poland" – the Award granted to foreigners whose actions,
achievements and creativity bring benefits to Poland and the Polish nation. The prize
is awarded in two age subcategories:
a. up to the age of 35
b. over 35 years of age
§ 4
THE CANDIDATE SELECTION PROCESS
1. Candidates are proposed by the Chapter, higher education institutions, scientific institutes,
cultural institutions and army.
2. Only living candidates may submit an application for the Award.
3. The submission of a candidate for the Award takes place by sending a completed and signed
application form to the Museum headquarters within the deadline specified in the schedule of
the application form. The application must clearly define the essence and achievements of the
candidate for the Award. The application may contain additional information and explanations
related to the recommended achievement, which it considers important. The candidate's
application form, together with the schedule and specimen of the declaration on the disclosure
of personal data by the applicant and the candidate will be available on the website
www.muzeum1939.pl
4. The submission of a candidate for the Award may be withdrawn at the request of the
applicant.
5. In the presence of at least half of the Chapter members, the Chapter, by way of voting with a
majority of votes, selects the laureates of the Award in particular categories from among the
candidates. Voting by electronic means is allowed. In case of the same number of votes, the
chairman of the Chapter has the casting vote.
6. The Chapter may refuse to select a winner of the Award in a given category if none of the
proposed candidates meets the formal or substantive requirements for the Award in a given
category.
7. The decisions of the Chapter are final and may not be appealed against.
8. Any amendments to these Rules and Regulations may be made in the same manner in which
they were established.
9. The Museum will be the administrator of personal data (in accordance with RODO/GDPR) of
the members of the Chapter and candidates for the Award. The Museum undertakes to ensure
and apply appropriate organizational and technical measures in order to ensure adequate
security of the processed data.
* Regulation 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the
protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of
such data and repealing Directive 95/46/EC.
10. Applicants for the prize and persons entering applicants are obliged to fill in a declaration of
disclosure of their personal data in accordance with the regulation of the RODO/GDPR. A specimen
declaration will be made available in accordance with §4.
§5
The Award Chapter
1. The Award is granted by the Chapter composed of 11 members, chaired by Prof. Jacek
Namieśnik, PhD, and Karol Nawrocki, PhD
2. Members of the Chapter are appointed and dismissed by the Organizers.
3. The term of office of the Chapter lasts 5 years.
4. The composition of the Chapter is specified in Attachment No. 1 to the Regulations. At the
request of the Chapter, the Organisers may appoint experts or reviewers in order to obtain
confirmation of the quality, originality and significance of the achievements of the candidates
qualified for the competition. The subject of the reviewers' assessment is not the overall
achievements of the candidate, but only the significance of the precisely defined achievement
proposed for the Prize.
5. The Chapter holds meetings convened by the chairman of the Chapter.
6. Members of the Chapter, if it is not possible to attend meetings in person, may participate in
them through means of remote communication.
7. Members of the Chapter are obliged to keep secret the course of meetings and the results of
the selection of the laureates of the Award until they are announced to the public.
8. Membership in the Chapter ceases as a result of the expiry of the term of office, dismissal,
resignation or death of a member.
9. The technical support for the Chapter meetings is provided by the Award Office, appointed by
the Director of the Museum.
10. The task of the Award Office is to organize the works of the Chapter, including in particular
verification of the submitted applications and their presentation to the Chapter, coordination of
the Chapter's contact with the candidates proposed for the Award.
