Presentation of an original, historical Willys MB vehicle - a new acquisition of the Museum
Dr. Marcin Westphal, head of the collections department, on behalf of the Directorate of the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk welcomed those gathered on the square in front of the Museum building:
"We not only present a new exhibit today, but also celebrate its birthday. This is the 74th birthday of this Willys MB produced in July 1944. The vehicle is old, but as you can see, it is in a great shape. It is a fully original car, it has an original engine and it drives - what you will be able to see in a moment. 360 thousand cars in this version were produced during the war, but after the war they were also used, and now they are very interesting collector's items - this vehicle presented today will enrich our collection.”
The presented exhibit was the command vehicle of F company, the 2nd battalion, the 32nd artillery regiment, 1st infantry division of the USA. "After next Tuesday, the Willys MB will be present at our exhibition 'A million from the ocean', dedicated to Poles serving in the United States Army. Therefore, the vehicle is painted in the colours of the American 1st Infantry division. We talk about this unit, among other things, at our exhibition "- said Dr. M. Westphal.
The Willys MB was not the only vehicle presented on the square in front of the Museum. Everyone interested could also watch a Dodge WC 52 light truck - also an exhibit from the Museum's collection, but also vehicles belonging to the “Hell on Wheels” reconstruction group, such as another Willys MB and Dodge, as well as a GMC truck and Greyhound M8 transporter - the only such vehicle in Poland. All cars could be watched closely.
