Museum on Water - cruises with a guide and guided tours of Westerplatte

Museum on Water | 13 July - 29 September
Cruises with a guide and guided tours of Westerplatte
Gdansk - Westerplatte - Gdansk

14 July 2019 will see the launch of regular cruises of our ship on the Gdansk - Westerplatte route. We invite you to cruises within the framework of the Museum on Water project.

Museum on Water is a project to create a comprehensive and coherent story of World War II, including the battlefield area of Westerplatte.

We invite you to educational cruises to Westerplatte, during which you will learn about the history of the port of Gdansk, and then we will show you around the battlefield, bringing you closer to its poignant history from the first days of September 1939. The idea of creating a water connection between the modern Museum of the Second World War in Gdansk and the historic battlefield of Westerplatte - a symbol of the beginning of one of the most tragic conflicts in the history of mankind and a heroic defence - was created in April 2017, when two state cultural institutions were merged: Museum of the Second World War in Gdansk and the Museum of Westerplatte and War of 1939 A visit to Westerplatte, telling the story of the beginning of World War II in Poland and the tragic autumn of 1939, was to be an introduction to the continuation of the story, which would be presented more universally, exhaustively, with international motifs by the exhibition at the Museum of the Second World War in Gdansk.

In 2019, just before the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II, a project aimed at creating a comprehensive and coherent story about the war, including the Westerplatte area, was made possible thanks to the support of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

The Museum of the Second World War in Gdansk, which in its statutory activity has, among others, "protection, maintenance and revitalization of the complex of military architecture objects in the area of Westerplatte [...]", consistently conducts activities aimed at deep understanding of the history of the Military Transit Warehouse, education commemorating the merits and high morale of Polish soldiers defending the sovereignty of their homeland in September 1939 and to create an outdoor Westerplatte Museum for educational and exhibition activities and to bring the historic Westerplatte battlefield area to a state worthy of the rank of this place - a symbol.

Within the framework of the Museum on Water project, we invite you on an educational cruise to Westerplatte, during which a qualified guide will tell you about the history of the port of Gdansk during the cruise and then show you around the Westerplatte battlefield. On the ship you will learn the context of selected objects from archaeological research conducted by the Museum of Westerplatte and War of 1939 (branch of the Museum of the Second World War), which are the first top class archaeological works in the post-war history of the peninsula. We also invite you to discover dozens of curiosities located in different places of the ship, which will complement the knowledge of the unique place that is Westerplatte and will make you realize its international importance.
