#LookInsideOurBook – English edition of "World Battlefield Museums Forum” | #M2WSwirtualnie

Today is World Book and Copyright Day and the final  day of our "Mask & Book" project. On this occasion, as part of #LookInsideOurBook series, we publish online an English edition of "World Battlefield Museums Forum", an  illustrated record of an international conference that took place at the Museum of the Second World War in Gdansk in September 2018. The forum brought together representatives of battlefield museums from several countries around the world.

The World Battlefield Museums Forum (WBMF) was a conference designed and hosted in September 2018 at the Museum of the Second World War in Gdansk. The WBMF book was subsequently published with a wish to continue the WBMF conferences in the coming years. We were happy to welcome the overall positive response by the world's largest museums dealing with war conflicts. This prompted us to organize the second edition of WBMF, which is scheduled to take place in September 2020 in Gdańsk (more: https://muzeum1939.pl/wbmf).

The book made available to you as PDF file is a collection of papers from various museum institutions, among others from Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Greece, France, China, the United States, and Poland. The conference articles discuss a variety of  topics and examine challenges faced by cultural institutions which, at the same time,  are remembrance sites. Among those challenges are finding ways of establishing constructive dialogue between the present and the past or strengthening national identity by means of  history. Apart from a worldwide perspective, the publication also includes texts focusing on selected local activities, such as archaeological excavations carried out in Westerplatte, aiming to promote wider knowledge of the battle waged in 1939 on Westerplatte peninsula and discuss commemorative aspects. In the book you will also find  a number of photographic images and transcripts of WBMF panel discussions.
