‘THE POMERANIAN CRIME OF 1939’

LOCATION: TEMPORARY EXHIBITION HALL, LEVEL -3

TIME: UNTIL MARCH 31st, 2024

The exhibition is dedicated to a planned and mass extermination action
carried out in the area of Pomerania along the Vistula and Kujawy.
The victims were predominantly Polish and Jewish citizens, representing
diverse social layers: clergy, intellectuals, workers, and landowners.
Mentally ill individuals were also subjected to the massacres.
The perpetrators were members of various German police formations,
the Wehrmacht, and to a large extent, representatives of the German
national minority who were members of the Volksdeutsche Selbstschutz.

The term ‘Pomeranian Crime of 1939’ has only recently appeared in scientific literature. Prior to that, terms such as ‘German Katyn of 1939,’ ‘pogrom, ‘bloody Pomeranian autumn,’ and the terms used by the perpetrators, Säuberungsaktion and Intelligenzaktion, were encountered.

The creators of the exhibition employ a suggestive means of expression. Installations that can be viewed at the exhibition compare Polish identity to a tree that first grew lushly but was later cut down due to the hatred of neighbors.

The exhibition has been well-received both by the museum community and our visitors. The Pomeranian Regional Authority leader, Dariusz Drelich, decided to honor the curators of the exhibition by conveying special thanks through his office director. The exhibition will be open to visitors until March 31st, 2024. The exhibition is free and located in the temporary exhibition hall on level -3.
