Opening of the temporary exhibition "Stefan Rowecki-Grot"
The temporary exhibition devoted to General Stefan Rowecek, composed of several dozen display boards, has been opened in the Museum of the Second World War in Gdansk. The exhibition presents the life of Stefan Rowecki from the moment of his birth to the moment of his arrest.
This year is the 122nd anniversary of the birth of General Stefan Rowecki. The idea to honour and present the life of the general to the younger generation was born in the Main Medical Library. At the initiative of its director, Dr. Wojciech Germaziak cooperation has been established with the New Files Archives, which has the largest stock of documents of the Polish Underground State. Cooperation has been established with other institutions and people who have in their collections photographs and documents regarding Stefan Rowecki.
"Today, I am opening an exhibition dedicated to General Stefan Rowecki. For me, he is a very important figure. Probably one of the most important amongst those who worked for the Polish cause during the war. It seems to me that there could not have been a better leader during the war than General Rowecki, at a time of difficulty, a time when we were under two occupations,” said Tomasz Gliniecki, deputy director of the Museum during the official opening of the exhibition.
"The General in an absolutely unique way was able to combine features that on one hand made him a professional - a very good commander, a demanding commander who knew the strength of an order (...), but always - despite differences of opinion - he highly valued and respected the orders and command of General Sikorski.""He had the ability combine the civil and political world. It is mainly thanks to him that the Polish Underground State grew into the formation that we know today that was able to carry out most areas of normal statehood even though it was underground," said the deputy director of the Museum.
“His heroism and military service, as well as his tragic death in a concentration camp, are a warning and show how tragic the experience of World War II was," said Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of National Defence Bartłomiej Grabski, who is present at the opening of the exhibition.
