A black and white photograph taken during Christmas 1940, showing soldiers posing at an improvised Christmas tree, belonging to Wiktor Gryka of the Polish Independent Carpathian Rifle Brigade and signed "First Christmas in Alexandria". Sergeant Wiktor Gryka (born 13.05.1904 in Bork) was interned at a camp in Romania in 1939, which he later fled. He joined the Polish Armed Forces in June 1940. He served in the Polish Independent Carpathian Rifle Brigade and in the 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division. He fought in the Battle of Tobruk and at Monte Cassino, among others.
