The 1st stage of Archeological Mission has been completed!
In October and November 2016 our Archeology Depertment conducted the 1st stage of archeological research. The foundations of two important historical buildings were unearthed – the brick foundations of the Officer Villa and the concrete floor of Guardhouse 5 that collapsed on 2nd September 1939 struck by a bomb from Stuka dive-bomber burying 5-6 soldiers in the rubble.
Excavations unearthed many interesting artifacts related to the history of Westerplatte, including a unique, metal eagle that used to be worn on soldiers helmets and was damaged in the explosion of Guardhouse 5, a chain watch, or some interesting artefacts from the earlier periods – a small metal horse ( a child's toy); a round, musket led ball from the XVIIth. century; a unique oval German identity disc from WWI; a woman's gold wedding ring from 1938 with inscription on the inside. Overall, more than 4000 artefacts were retrieved, of which 700 are now undergoing conservation.
Currently our archeologists are working on legal paperwork to be completed before the 2nd stage of Archeological Mission to begin in April-May 2016.
