Recalling the atrocities of German and Soviet occupiers is the duty of both historians on the whole and the Museum of the Second World War – as a scientific and research institution pursuing educational goals – since Eastern Europe became an arena for unprecedented barbaric acts, genocide, and dehumanisation by the Soviets and Germans in 1939–1945.
“These territories passed from hand to hand, becoming a crime scene of atrocities committed by the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. The events which occurred at the time in Eastern Poland, the Baltic states, and Western territories of USSR, despite the passage of time since the greatest conflict in human history, remain in many aspects unrecognised or obscure,” reads the preface to the latest issue of War and Remembrance.
The occupation of Eastern Europe is addressed in four articles. One of them discusses, among other things, the specdeportees and deportations deep into the USSR (Dmitriy Panto). Wojciech Grott’s article touches on the pages of Kurier Wileński and its coverage of actions by the two occupying powers. Swiatosław Kulinok, in turn, writes about the obliteration of crime traces in Belarus by the Germans. The crimes by Third Reich and Soviet Union against Poles are referred to by Maciej Jan Mazurkiewicz as well.
The Miscellany section this time presents two valuable, comprehensive texts. Marcin Kłodziński’s article is devoted to the battle for Tczew bridges on 1 September 1939. Karol Polejowski details the significance of Olgierd Christa’s Notes as an invaluable study material on Home Army 5th Wilno Brigade in Gdańsk Pomerania just after the end of World War II, and elaborates on the contents. The third issue concludes with the review of Ryszard Gansiniec’s Notatki lwowskie (notes from Lwów) by Rafał Michliński.
The periodical can be purchased in the museum store (–3 level) and in the online store.
