The author has attempted to present an outline of the fate of Katyn families from the interwar period to the end of the Polish People’s Republic based on unique source materials most often preserved in family archives. He has proven that home souvenirs are as important asource of historical research as documents stored in archives. It is all amatter of asking the right research questions. The author points out in his text that it is necessary to conduct interviews with the last surviving witnesses of World War ££ and ask them about their memorabilia of those times.

Pamiętniki ofiar katyńskich

During the exhumation works carried out by the Germans on the grounds of the Katyn Forest at the turn of March and April 1943, memoirs written by Polish officers during their stay in the Kozielsk camp were found among the remains of the victims and countless artefacts. The analysis of their contents by means of the linguistic methodology of the world image helped to broaden existing knowledge on the period of captivity. In addition to the Soviet methods of destroying the individual and national identity of the prisoners, the analysis also revealed emotions, trauma symptoms, dreams and hopes of the arre- ted officers hidden in the language.

The difficult times of the great trials of World War II gave birth to heroes – those who “acted accordingly”. In particular, the letters and cards found on the victims and those the prisoners succeeded in sending to their loved ones are a source of information about the fate of the prisoners and their families. They testify to who the victims were and who was missing in their families and in Poland, which was being rebuilt after many years. They are full of words of love, expressions of longing and hope for unity; they speak of mutual respect and the struggle to preserve human dignity. The correspondence unearthed from the grave is a signpost indicating patterns to emulate.

Filmy Katyńskie (1943-1953)

The article presents the history of four documentary films from the years 1943–1953 devoted to the Katyn crime. The German film from 1943concerned the exhumation works of the Germans at the crime scene after the discovery of the Katyn graves. Its authors blamed the Soviets for the murder. The Soviet film from 1944discredited the previous findings of the Germans. The Soviets attributed a similar mission to the production prepared by “Czołowka” ì the film studio of the Polish Army. The 1953film was created in the Polish emigration circles and amplified the message of the American Ray Madden Commission concerning the circumstances of the Katyn crime and the Soviet responsibility for the murder.

Juliusz Bardach – kłamca katyński

The author analyses the work of Colonel Juliusz Bardach the military attaché of the Polish Embassy in Moscow in the years 1945–1947. At the time, Bardach was involved in the propagation of the Katyn lie. The testimony to this is the misinformation of the families of officers detained in the period 1939–1940in Kozielsk, Ostashkov and Starobelsk. In all instances, Bardach informed the families that the Germans were responsible for the death of their relatives. Following the completion of his mission in Moscow, the historian continued his scientific work as aprominent resear- cher on Polish law and Lithuanian scholar.

The article aims to present methods of persecution of the Polish and Kashubian people in the area bordering the II Polish Republic districts of Bytow and Lebork in the years 1933–1939, upon the assumption of power in Germany by the National Socialist Party. During this period, acts of terror intensified against the local inhabitants who expressed their Polish identity. It was related to the national policy of the German authorities, which aimed at the total Germanization of the Kashubian population.

Вербовка и подготовка разведывательно-диверсионной агентуры немецкими спецслужбами на территории Беларуси в 1941–1944 гг.: национальный аспект

During the period of occupation of Soviet Belarus, the German secret services established more than 50 intelligence and sabotage training centres for future agents. The article presents an analysis of its composition by nationality. The main group of agents trained were Belarusians. In addition, prisoners of war were trained (including Russians, Belarusians, Ukrainians, Kazakhs), and Poles recruited in Western Belarus. They prepared agents of Jewish, Caucasian, and Volksdeutsche decent, as well as other nationalities. The centres were located in Baranowicze, Brzesc, Hancewicze, Minsk, Navahrudak and Pinsk.

The article concerns the history of the activity of Lew Charko in Gdansk in the summer and autumn of 1945. He was responsible, among others, for the restoration of St. Mary’s Basilica – one of the most beautiful churches in the city – heavily damaged during World War ££. Notwithstanding the poverty and hunger prevailing in post-war Gdansk, Charko decided to carry out aninitial renovation of the building. Major Charko’s early intervention most likely saved St. Mary’s Church from collapse.

The article presents the major research trends on the German occupation regime in Belarus in the disserta- tions of Belarusian historians from 1991 to 2004. An important feature of this period in the research on the German occupation was the search for innovative directions of research. Contemporary scientific work attaches great importance to the study of the organisation of the health care and education system in occupied areas, the Holocaust policy, agrarian policy and the issues of collaboration. Fragmentary research on forced labour, the fate of prisoners of war and the activities of the Catholic Church in occupied Belarus began in the discussed period.
