I. General guidelines
- Authors who submit works for publication are required to follow the publishing instructions contained in these publication guidelines.
- Editorial board reserves the right to accept only original works that have not yet been published or accepted for publication by other publishers.
- Any cases of ghost-writing and guest authorship as well as breaches of academic ethic will result in the manuscript not being accepted for publication.
- Multi-author works should have all individual contributors indicated.
- Under the agreement concluded, the copyright of works submitted for publication is granted exclusively to the publisher.
- Editorial board may return works to their authors for appropriate editing according to the guidelines, with a deadline for their introduction.
- Editorial board reserves the right to revise and edit works, including any necessary stylistic corrections, abbreviations and other corrections to standardise the orthography standards of the periodical.
II. Guidelines for submitting works for publication
- Works intended for print should be sent by e-mail in .doc, .docx or .rtf format. to the following address: redakcjawip@muzeum1939.pl.
- The character limit is 60.000 with included spaces and footnotes for articles and source material; for reviews and reports the character limit is 40.000.
- Each article should include:
- abstract in Polish (up to 800 characters),
- key words (minimum 5) in Polish,
- completed and signed author's declaration,
- author’s individual ORCID number,
- author’s short biographical note (up to 500 characters), including name, surname, academic or professional degrees, affiliation, main research interests, major publications, current e-mail address,
- appended bibliography based on the principles outlined in point IV, paragraph 11.
III. Guidelines for the general format of the main manuscript and footnotes
- Works must be in Times New Roman font; size of the main text - 12 pt., footnotes - 10 pt.
- Line spacing of the main text should be 1.5 lines, of footnotes - 1. Indentation of the paragraph in the main text should be 1.25 cm. Margins should be 2.5 cm on each side. Main text and footnotes should be aligned.
- Footnotes must be used. References to them should be placed before punctuation marks.
- Reviews should include above the text the following information: title, name of the publisher, place and year of publication, number of pages. Name and surname of the author of the review should be placed at the end of the text on the right-hand side.
IV. Guidelines for forms of notation in the main text and footnotes
- Give names of organisations or institutions in full for the first occurrence and abbreviated in parentheses - e.g. in Polish: Brygada Ochrony Skarbowej (BOS). In subsequent paragraphs of the text only the abbreviation is used.
- Write names of months in words (e.g. 1 September 1939).
- Use dictionary abbreviations (e.g., i.a., Col., kg, km, ha, M, cent., etc.).
- After ordinal numbers referring to military units use a suffix: -st, -nd, -rd, -th (e.g. 13th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Armoured Division).
- The [sic!] sign should be avoided. Issues requiring a comment should be discussed in footnotes.
- When quoting passages from sources or literature in the main text, use inverted commas rather than italics. Use [...] to mark omissions within quotations. Quotations longer than 3 lines should be separated, font size reduced (10), side margins increased and written without inverted commas.
- Keep the original spelling of the names and surnames in the native languages of the persons appearing in the text or in the footnotes.
- Use Latin symbols: ibidem, idem/eadem, passim, et al. Avoid the use of op. cit.
; repetition of the initial elements of the description and adding an ellipsis should be used instead. - In the descriptions of foreign-language publications, use symbols and abbreviations appropriate for a given language, derived from the title pages, e.g.: ed., No., Vol., Bd., Aufl.
- Descriptive elements should be given in the language and alphabet in which they appear in the document (i.e. title, bibliographic notes).
- For footnotes keep the following order:
- archival source: name of archive, group name, reference, document title, date, card, e.g. AAN, KS, 484/70, Raport Konsulatu RP w Szczecinie w sprawie Kaszub, 10 VIII 1933, c. 17.
- bibliography: first name initial, author's last name, title in italics, place and year of publication, pages – and, in the case of a collective work, after the publication's title use [in:] and give work title, editor’s name after abbreviation (ed.) and, as above, e.g. M. Widernik, Lata II Rzeczypospolitej [w:] Dzieje miasta Gniewu do 1939 roku, ed. B. Śliwiński, Pelplin 1998, p. 220,
- articles in periodicals: first name initial, author's last name, title in italics, title of the periodical in inverted commas, followed by the year of publication without a comma, volume or number, pages, e.g. S. Piątkowski, Młodzież polska w propagandzie prasy gadzinowej dystryktu radomskiego lat 1939-1945, “Pamięć i Sprawiedliwość” 2011, no. 1, p. 32,
- press materials: first name initial, author's last name (if known), title in italics, title of the magazine in inverted commas, date of publication, pages, e.g. J. Sokolicz-Wroczyński, Chybione zamierzenie, “Rzeczpospolita”, 19 I 1929, p. 4,
- Internet sources: first name initial, author's last name (if known), title in italics, domain name, website address, date of access in square brackets, e.g. Ł. Zalesiński, Generał, który tworzył polską historię, Polska Zbrojna, http://polska-zbrojna.pl/home/articleshow/34378?t=General-ktory-tworzyl-polska-historie [access: 26 VIII 2021].
- In the bibliography section divide the entries into categories: archival sources, diaries and memoirs, studies, press, etc. Sort individual entries alphabetically according to surnames of authors, names of archives or institutions, press or titles of collective works, without including pages of mentioned publications.
V. Guidelines for iconographic material, tables and drawings
- Authors who attach iconographic material to their work are obliged to have the copyright or permission to use them from a person or institution that is the owner of the rights to such material.
- Iconographic material should be sent in electronic format (preferred file format: .jpg or .tif). Its resolution must be no be no less than 300 dpi.
- The iconographic material submitted should be duly signed. Its description should include, among others, its provenance.
- The place in the main text an illustration refers to should be specified in the main text, e.g. by inserting an entry: (pic. 1), (il. 4), etc.
- Tables and figures should be numbered separately. The descriptions of tables should be located above them and their source below.
