Archaeological research at Westerplatte began in 2016 on the initiative of the Westerplatte Museum and the War of 1939 and has been continued following its merger with the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk. The research forms part of interdisciplinary studies aimed at gaining the most comprehensive understanding of the history of the Military Transit Depot through the discovery and documentation of related structures and changes in the landscape resulting from the fighting. The primary objective remains the recovery of the remains of Polish soldiers who fell during the defense. To date, ten stages of detailed archaeological research have been carried out.
