Issue description
The war as a lasting source of cross-generational trauma is discussed by Piotr Kostyło; the material is a starting point for discussion on building a pedagogy of individual testimony. Meanwhile, in her English article, Rasa Čepaitienė explores the controversies of WWII memory in Lithuania, emphasising the tendency to hold the heroes of anti-Soviet and anti-German underground responsible for the participation in Holocaust crimes, while Ludmiła Rybczenko depicts the remembrance of the past in the reality of the ongoing since 2014 Russia’s overt aggression against Ukraine. The author also outlines the plans for development of Kiev’s museum facility – the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War.
Michał Szelągowski, the Museum’s educator, in his article “Explaining the unexplainable: the catastrophe of World War II as an educational challenge” examines the complex topic of the need to popularise the knowledge of crimes committed during that period of history. The material prepared by Magdalena Wędzińska presents the areas of knowledge and ignorance about the independence underground among the young generation. The main thematic section of this issue – Pedagogical aspect of WWII remembrance – is concluded with Wojciech Wichert’s article which subjects two books by Martin Broszat, a prominent German historian, to a critical scientific analysis.
The Miscellany section begins with the work of Dawid Kobiałka and co-authors. It features the results and conclusions of the comprehensive research conducted by the Institute of National Remembrance’s investigative division in the Chojnice forests. Meanwhile, Wojciech Samól's article provides a critical source analysis of one of the most important relics associated with Westerplatte – the alleged uniform jacket of Major Henryk Sucharski. In “Religion and religious policy of the III Reich,” Tomasz Szturo outlines, among other things, the relations between the representatives of Christian churches and the authorities of Nazi state. Concluding the 5th issue of the periodical, Michał Mikołajczak reports on a significant scientific conference which raised the difficult subject of Germanization policy of the German occupation authorities in Gdańsk Pomerania 1939–1945.
