War and Remembrance. Periodical of the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk 2020 no. 2
The second issue of War and Remembrance is devoted to the forgotten war of 1940, which is explored by two extensive articles. In their texts, Richard J. Evans and Jonathan Walker focus on the actual memory of World War II’s early years in the East and West. As the first author indicates, the threats of this armed conflict were perceived in different manners, the consequences of which were still present decades later. Jonathan Walker, in turn, details the English-Polish cooperation during the early months of war.

The publication also touches on subjects that will be of interest not only to historical researchers but also to any reader interested in contemporary Polish history. The Miscellany section includes five extensive articles. In the first one, Wojciech Samól confronts the headcount of Guardhouse No. 5 with the burials at officers’ villa. Radosław Wiśniewski looks closer at the history of forgotten German camp Soldau (Działdowo). In turn, the lives of Polish refugees in France in the years 1941–1944 are studied by Anna Pachowicz. Beata Kozaczyńska returns to the glorious page from life in the occupied capital in her article “The Warsaw Movement 1943. Warsaw Citizens to the Rescue of Polish Children Expelled from the Zamość Region.” Remigiusz Ławniczak recalls the post-war times, analysing the citizen’s attitudes in Chojnice and Chojnice poviat towards the strengthening Communist regime in 1945.
The second issue War and Remembrance also includes review articles and a report. Jarosław Wąsowicz depicts an event commemorating the Blessed Martyrs of World War II. In Tadeusz Wolsza’s review, one reads comments on Thomas Urban’s publication Katyn. The Crime and the Propaganda Struggle of the Great Powers, whereas Mariusz Krzysztofiński presents Anna Jagodzińska’s publication devoted to Priest Leon Stępniak – a former prisoner of the Dachau and Mauthausen-Gusen camps.
