From the collections of the Museum of the Second World War - Decorative rug

Among the many unique souvenirs in our collections - we present a decorative rug, belonging to a Jewish family. The fabric has floral and geometric motifs, characteristic for Polish rugs.

The decorative rug is made of plush on a linen warp and it belonged to the Jomtow family, who were a Jewish family hidden in Grochów, near Sokołów Podlaski during the occupation. In September 1942, the six-member Jomtow family asked for help and the Joniuk family took them in.

They hid the Jomtows in the attic of the barn, where they stayed until July 1944. In 1983, Jan Joniuk, Leokadia Michalska-Joniuk, Eugenia Bartosiak-Joniuk and Zofia Wycech-Joniuk were honoured with the medal of "Righteous Among the Nations".
