The big day has finally come! On 10th October 2016 the first stage of Archeological Mission on Westerplatte begun. The Mission is financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and has received the patronage of Minister Jaroslaw Sellin, Ministry of National Defence, and Ministry of Maritime Economy. Thorough archival research, multiple geo-radar screenings, months of preparations, and sorting out legal paperwork and planning permissions preceded the start of the Mission.
The first day of work on the site yielded exciting results: the outline of the foundations of the Officer Villa was uncovered. The results of this first dig are promising. The work goes on!
"After the first stage has been completed, the Voivodship Conservation Officer's commitee will gather to decide on the course of action regarding the unearthed foundations of the Officer Villa", says Filip Kuczma, the head of archeologists at the Museum.
